Profile Information

About me:
I am a watershed modeler/engineer who has been involved with the EPA Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) since I was 19. I was also 19 when I married my wife (a student from Thailand) when I was a student at the University of Florida. My wife and I lived in the married student housing complex of UF for 12 years while raising our three children until we went to Austraila for a few years to live and work in Canberra.
What Makes Me Remarkable:
I am unusual in this day and age of having had the same profession/obsession since age 20. I consider myself both blessed and cursed by this association with SWMM. Supporting public domain software is a burden that will stay with me until I die most likely but on the other hand my involvement with the program has meant that I have had some small impact on the lives of close to 1 billion people.

In my pursuit of my ABD (you can look it up) I lived more than 13 years at UF. My wife and I were very involved in the politics of the student housing complex and I was the Mayor of Diamond Village for three years, President of the Married Housing Complex's for two years and Vice Mayor for five years. I am very proud of our involvement in the Villages and I still remember it as one of the highlights of my life.
Shows I'm Interested In:
Survivor, Amazing Race, Tontine etc.
Current Occupation
Engineer, Real Name is Robert Dickinson
Relationship Status:
Married
Have Children?
Yes

Being an "Expert"

Virtually every psychological study that investigates expert "performers" - from chess grandmasters to concert pianists to brain surgeons - concludes that what separates these individuals from their peers is the amount of "deliberate practice" they are willing to endure. Hiya RED,

Hope MMIX is treating you well. I'll be heading back to northern Thailand for a short vacation (only two weeks) and friend of mine since college is coming with.

We're thinking of staying in Chiang Rai a few days and maybe going on a short trek or rafting trip.

Does your brother-in-law have any information I could look up on the web on his resort?

Thanks & have a super week!
Joe

How are you, Robert? I hope and trust that life finds you well. Can you believe the year's end is almost here? Where does time go? What have you been up to? Anything exciting? As luck would have it, I tore my ACL while competing in the first fencing tournament of the season. (Phrick.) I did, however, win the bout. That said, I would have preferred to lose if I could have kept my ACL intact :o I'm scheduled for surgery on the 2nd of December. Other than that, I'm just hangin' out. Should you have the time, drop me a line. Until then...

Every good wish,
Sandra

Thanks Doone,

The situation in Thailand is deteriorating, but I'll still be going - I'm committed there. I don't expect to be in places (or put myself in places) with potential trouble.

Cheers, Joe

Hi Doone,

Are you still traveling to CA often for work? I'll have to get some information on your brother-in-laws resort in the next month or two before my vacation.

Have a good week!

Bamboo talks.
It can't keep secrets,
likes to speak its mind,
always lets you know what's happening
in its rooted brakes and colonies,
takes its topics from black topsoil and river muck
bringing the underground to light;
and because it lingers for years between flowerings,
it scrapes one stalk against another
like cricket legs or rhythm sticks
to pass the time with music—
that is,
when it isn't busy jiving with wind
or chatting with a little bird
or talking shop with clumpgrass
or whispering to itself
or buttonholing strollers, insisting:
Cut me down,
make me into a flute.
Bamboo talks.
Sometimes it sings.
All you need to do is listen.
